Why Kenya is a special solar market
Few countries in Africa have Kenya's depth of solar experience. Decades of off-grid electrification — from solar home systems in rural counties to rooftop PV on Nairobi townhouses and lodges running entirely on solar in the Maasai Mara — have created a mature installer ecosystem. Combined with rising grid tariffs, frequent outages and strong year-round irradiation, solar is often the rational choice rather than the experimental one.
That maturity cuts both ways: alongside excellent installers, the market attracts briefcase operators who underquote, install substandard components and disappear before the first warranty claim. Choosing well matters more than choosing fast. Here is what to check.
1. Reference projects — in your region, not just on a website
Any serious installer should name at least three completed projects similar to yours, ideally within your county. A system that performs well in Nairobi's altitude behaves differently in the heat and humidity of Mombasa and the coast. Ask for photos with dates, the system size, and — most importantly — whether you may contact one or two previous clients. Installers who hesitate here are telling you something. 2. Component brands and warranties
A solar system is only as good as its weakest part. Ask the installer to specify, in writing, the exact brand and model of:
- Panels: tier-one manufacturers with a product warranty of at least 10–12 years and a performance warranty of 25 years or more. Check that the modules comply with KEBS standards.
- Inverter: the component most likely to fail first. Look for an established brand with local service support and a warranty of 5 years or more — not an unbranded unit that only the installer can repair.
- Battery: the largest single cost driver. Insist on a written cycle-life or throughput warranty.
If a quote says only "550W panel" or "5kW inverter" without a brand, treat it as incomplete.
3. Lithium vs lead-acid: the honest trade-off

For a home that cycles its battery every night, lithium almost always wins on lifetime economics. For rare backup use, a well-maintained lead-acid bank can still be defensible — provided the installer sizes it generously, because shallow sizing kills lead-acid batteries within a couple of years.
4. Sizing red flags
The most expensive mistakes happen before installation. Walk away, or at least get a second opinion, if an installer:
- Quotes without a load audit. A serious installer lists your appliances, their wattage and hours of use, and asks which loads can shift to daylight. No audit, no quote — that is the rule.
- Proposes a suspiciously small battery. An undersized bank is the cheapest way to win a tender and the fastest way to disappoint you. Compare usable kilowatt-hours, not just the headline amp-hours.
- Ignores future loads. An electric water heater, a second fridge or a borehole pump you plan to add next year should already shape today's inverter choice.

5. Maintenance and after-sales
Ask who answers the phone when the inverter alarms at 8 p.m. Clarify the service model before signing: Is there a maintenance contract? What does the annual check include — panel cleaning, torque checks on connections, battery health readings, firmware updates? How fast is the response time, and does the installer honour manufacturer warranties locally, or will you be shipping an inverter abroad at your own cost? A good installer offers a written after-sales plan; a great one schedules the first inspection before you ask.
6. Price indications in KES
Prices vary with component brands, battery capacity and site conditions, so treat the following as indicative ranges observed in the Kenyan market as of 2026 — not quotes:
- Small backup or lighting systems: roughly KES 60,000–150,000
- 3–5 kW hybrid home system with lithium storage: roughly KES 450,000 to over 1,000,000
- Larger commercial and institutional systems: quoted per project after a site survey
Quotes that sit dramatically below these ranges usually mean undersized batteries, unbranded components or both. Compare quotes only after each installer has done a proper load audit — otherwise you are comparing different products.
